All proceeds from RUN! GEEK! RUN! will go directly to support the Child and Family Network Centers.
The Child and Family Network Centers (CFNC) was established in 1984 by mothers living in public housing after 17 of their children failed kindergarten.
Our founders were so successful, CFNC’s first class went from failing to advance a grade level, to being recognized as gifted by their public school. From there, we’ve grown to serve 139 kids across eight different classrooms in Alexandria’s poorest neighborhoods. To date, we have helped over 4,000 families.
The families we serve are living in a gap where they make too much to qualify for Head Start (the federal free preschool program), but not nearly enough to afford a private preschool education. For these families, there are few options for high-quality preschool. Without an early education, low-income children are at risk of entering kindergarten almost two years behind. If they are still behind by the time they are in third grade, their risk of dropping out of high school, getting arrested, or becoming a teen parent increases at an alarming rate.
We break down the barriers to learning that are caused by living in poverty. We provide comprehensive health and family services to address health issues that affect a child’s ability to learn. All of our children receive two meals and a snack every day, and our preschool program is bilingual to support our English Language Learning population. Not only that, our classrooms are located where our families live – in apartment buildings, in neighborhood storefronts, rec centers, and elementary schools – so that lack of access to reliable transportation doesn’t become a barrier to receiving the education that these kids deserve.
CFNC was recently featured in the U.S. Chamber of Commerce Foundation’s blog regarding their success during the COVID-19 pandemic – check it out here!
